FPF seizes illicit timber in Anantnag; Villagers demand special screening

Anantnag, Mar 7: Forest Protection Force (FPF) has seized large quantity of illegal timber during raids in Mattipora village of South Kashmir's Anantnag district. The village falls in the range of forest division Lidder (Pahalgam). Acting on a complaint, Forest Protection Force Team conducted a raid at the residence Khursheed Ahmad in village Mattipora and 105 cft of illicit timber. Deputy Director Forest Protection Force Lidder, Dr Mumtaz Majeed Sofi told Early Times that seized timber comprises of Deodar and Kail. "An FIR has been registered at Police Station Mattan against the accused and timber has been seized from their places," he said.
Official sources revealed that the timber was extracted from Hutmurah forests [Compartment Number 2 and 3].
"The matter is being investigated. We are trying to find out how the accused managed to bring such a huge quantity of timber from forests to village which is at a distance almost 10 to 12Km's," they said.
They revealed that complaints of illegal green felling were pouring in from Compartment Number 2 and 3 continuously and staff deployed in those two compartments was also suspended multiple times but the illegal green felling hasn't stopped.
"This is happening in connivance with employees and officials of the department," they added.
Divisional Forest Officer Lidder, Mehraj Ahmad, wasn't available for a comment. Local residents of Hutmarh Mattan, who spoke to Early Times over phone, said that they had lodged complaints against the illegal green felling but the officials didn't heard them. "Smugglers, who loot green gold, have nexus with the employees and officials of the department," they alleged and department a special screen of the forest area.
They also demand stern action against the employees and officers of the forest department for their negligence and supporting the green gold smugglers.
