Early Times Report

srinagar, Apr 2: With the Jammu and Kashmir Police having seized from Srinagar atleast eight luxury vehicles that were stolen from other parts of the country, Kashmir is being seen as "chor bazaar" for such vehicles.
Official sources said numerous such vehicles may have been sold in Kashmir over the years as the authorities looked ignorant about such markets having been operational in the Valley.
The development has come to fore after Srinagar police seized some cars from the summer capital. A police official said on credible inputs, police seized the cars and were investigating the modus operandi of the car lifters.
A police official said that luxurious cars lifted from other parts of the country were brought into Kashmir and replaced with the "cloned identification specifics of vehicles having a valid and genuine ownership and were then sold at throwaway prices."
Sources said a case vide number 9 of 2009 has been registered at Police Station Shaheed Gunj in Srinagar.
Police sources said the people who were sold such cars have expressed shock over how the registration numbers were tampered and that vehicles with same numbers were active in other states.
A senior police official said it was difficult to say as to how many such vehicles may have already been sold in Kashmir. "Nothing can be said , it me be thousands, it may be hundreds, things will be clear only after investigations are completed," the official told Early Times.
He said a senior official of the rank of Superintendent of Police is leading the Special Investigation Team constituted for the matter.
He said many arrests were likely as names of some suspects have surfaced in the case. "Things will be clear soon," he said.
"While we remained focused more on tackling militancy and law and order, such unlawful trade may have gone on for long," the official said.
