Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 4: One day workshop on English pronunciation was held in Delhi Public School Nagbani, Jammu - (West).
The resource person of this workshop was \ Darshan Sharma ESL Teacher and Trainer. Teaching pronunciation is an important part of any language learning course. This workshop was aimed at helping the teachers to understand the root cause of mispronunciation like probable misdirection of tongue and simultaneously correcting the accent thereby overcoming the influence of mother tongue.
Sharma with the help of theatrical voice and speech, presented simple and effective adjustments that can be implemented into everyday conversation. The workshop covered the three major aspects of speech that affect pronunciation. These tools can be implemented through vocal practice techniques. He also said that accents should be charming and add a sort of music to language. Accurate pronunciation supports everyday communication.
It makes everyone a better listener and it allows others to understand what you are saying without the irritation of asking you to repeat yourself. He laid stress on doing more listening and accepting the fact that letters and words may sound very different than we have imagined or learned. He said that we should change our habits because pronunciation good or bad is a habit. The workshop proved to be very beneficial as it helped the teachers to remove doubts and showed them the way to improve their vocal skills.
The workshop was presided by S. S. Sodhi, Director of the school who said that these types of workshops must be held at frequent intervals for the teaching faculty to improve their speaking skills besides sharing his life long experience in the field of education. He also thanked Sharma for conducting such an eye opener workshop for the school faculty.
The workshop concluded with an interactive session in which many questions were asked by the teachers and they were given answers by actively involving them in many activities which required their participation.
