Properties of leaders grow alarmingly, Jammu politicians no exception

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 5: Allegations about politicians amassing huge wealth during the past few years are galore in the election season across the country. Leaders of political parties are pointing towards the affidavits filed by their opponents declaring their assets. The trend of amassing wealth is not only confined to other states it has reached Jammu region also, where politicians have grown from rags to riches during the past few years.
While Union Minister for Finance and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley recently pointed out the rise in the properties of Congress president Rahul Gandhi over the last few years despite not having any known business, the alarming rise in the wealth of several politicians of Jammu irrespective of their political affiliations needs to be looked into closely since a majority of them are not owning any business or operating any trade which could have led to the alarming growth in the wealth they possess presently.
There is significant number of such politicians in Jammu city whose assets have grown from leaps and bounds over the last couple of years, however, their properties hardly comes under public scrutiny despite of the fact that most of them are either not that active in the political spectrum of the state or have no major role to play politically.
The questions are now being raised on these politicians and people are demanding an audit into their properties, which they have acquired allegedly by misusing their contacts with their political colleagues, who assume positions in the corridors of power frequently.
"It is easy to find out how the wealth of a political leader has increased or decreased during the successive years as while filing the nominations, a declaration has to be made before the election authorities, but properties of many second and third string leaders of the political parties, many of whom have never contested elections have registered meteoric rise" said Sudhir, of Aware Citizens' Movement. "These 'people run transfer mafia, acquire licenses, arm twist administration to get undue benefits for sections of people and get handsome cuts through shady deals. There are many such 'political insignificants' in all prominent political parties, who have grown without doing anything" he added, demanding identification of such commission agents.
While huge fortunes made by political leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mayavati, Chandrababu Naidu and others are being discussed at most election platforms across the country, these 'political insignificants' conveniently escape public eye and continue to amass huge wealth even when adverse political dispensations occupy positions of power. "These are the people who nurture and oil corrupt practices in the government and politics. It is time to expose such people by an audit of their income and its sources" Sudhir reiterated.
