Rise in militant attacks in Jammu puts security agencies on tenterhooks

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 10: A surge in deadly militant attacks in Jammu region including the winter capital has put the security agencies on tenterhooks.
Official sources said the security grid has been put on high alert whereas the security agencies particularly the Jammu and Kashmir Police have intensified intelligence network apprehending that sleeper cells could be active. A detailed meeting to review security preparedness in the region is expected soon in the winter capital. The sources said the meeting is likely to be chaired by the Governor SP Malik himself.
Sources said following intelligence inputs the police have already been directed to intensify night vigil especially on the highways connecting to the Jammu city. "Similar measures are being put in place in other regions of the district," said a senior police official on the condition of anonymity.
For the past few months, there has been a rise in the militant attacks with security agencies apprehending that militant sleeper cells could be active at some places including the Doda region, which was declared militant free a few years ago. In the Doda region, it's the second deadly attack on politicians belonging to the right wing parties in the recent months. In the latest, a RSS leader and his PSO were killed whereas previously a BJP leader was killed a few months ago.
The Jammu district, on the other hand, has been on the hit list of the terror groups.
In March, the main bus stand in Jammu witnessed third bomb blast in 10 months in which dozens of people were injured and at least one person died.
The JKP had claimed that the Hizbul Mujahideen was behind the Jammu bus stand blast. Though the accused - Yasir Bhatt -was arrested within hours, the Jammu city continues to be on the radars of the terror network.
Sources said the Pakistani handlers of the terror groups want the situation in Jammu to be tense so that normal life remains affected in the region.
