'Start operation cleanup in J&K by removing police officer with murky track record'
6/28/2019 1:55:18 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 27: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the investigating agencies to expedite the probe into corruption cases registered against the "high and mighty."
Shah's direction has unnerved the people at the top as they still believe that they are above the law. "Union Home Minister's direction is a welcome step, but if he really wants the corrupt to be shown the door, he should ask the investigating agencies to probe corruption charges against the police officer in the state. The good governance cannot be achieved by having corrupt and vindictive people as the decision makers," said an observer.
He said, "The police officer in Jammu and Kashmir has had a murky track record and everyone is aware about the charges which were leveled against him, while he was serving in different capacities. Even his own department had indicted him in a recruitment scam. He hogged the headlines for running an illegal transport business and for his alleged involvement in land-grab case."
An analyst said, "The drive against the corrupt elements ordered by the Union Home Minister has to start from the top. This drive should not be limited to selected people. The Union Home Minister is aware about the credentials of the people who are handling Jammu and Kashmir. Many people expect him to act against the police officer, whose credentials are dubious and who has been allegedly misusing his official position to settle his personal scores."
He said, "Wiping out corrupt elements from the state administration and relieving them is a litmus test for the new Home Minister. The police officer enjoys the patronage of the politicians, who recommended him for the post and got him elevated."
The analyst said, "The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, is a tough man and he is famous for taking tough decisions. If he wants drive against corruption to become a success in Jammu and Kashmir then he would have to clean system from the top. Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive state and it cannot afford to have the people with the murky track record. Crusade against corruption will remain incomplete without acting against the police officer calling the shots."
