Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 28: In a brazen violation of law of the land and apparent disrespect of the Right To Information Act, the Warden at the boys hostel of Kashmir University has declined to share information as sought under the RTI and termed it "waste of time."
Official sources said Muzaffar Magray a Law student at Kashmir University had sought the information related to income expenditure of Hostel budget at said university as the hostel inmates alleged that facilities as provided to them are not up to the mark and that the funds meant for the same were being swindled.
The letter was sent to the Public Information Officer of the KU who in turn sought details from the hostel Warden at the Hazratbal campus.
"But the reply from the warden was shocking," said a senior official at the KU, on the condition of anonymity.
The said Warden in the letter has pleaded that reply to the RTI was waste of time and thus he would not share the information.
"The undersigned suggest applicant to approach the budget section instead of wasting our precious time which otherwise could be used for developmental work. Moreover, the undersigned also advice the applicant to deposited the Mess outstanding dues of Rs 7772/which is fundamental right of the boarder," the Warden said in the official reply.
The KU students from the Law department had protested by sharing the reply of the Warden on the social media. "When Kashmir University formally shows disrespect for law, what law will they teach," said a delegation of students from the KU.
The students said the matter was brought to the office of the Vice Chancellor but that no action was taken.
"How can you support an erring officer who has shown disrespect for the law before a law student? What message is KU administration trying to give," said a senior official.
When contacted the KU authorities tried to downplay the matter. "Warden has done nothing wrong and the office of the VC supports him for his conduct," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Despite repeated attempts the said Warden couldn't be contacted for comments.
