Early Times Report
KATHUA, July 24: Sanctioned way back in 2003 by then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, Bhinni nallah bridge near Berail has seen light of the day as successive governments since then have failed to take it's construction in hand with the result the river spells a doom in the area when in spate.
The people of Berail and other hamlets have to cross the river by foot during floods in Monsoon and it is a. Nightmerish experience for them. Some times people are being washed away by strong current of water and people have no body to blame except their fate.
According to residents of the area the river has taken many lives , live stock and other property over the years but the authorities at the helm of affairs never thought it their duty to construct the bridge over the river.
Abdul Wahid a local resident said Mufti Mohammed Sayeed had also Sanctioned RS six crore for bridge and adjoining road which was never constructed later after he relinquished the office.
faring worst every year when the Monsoon starts people's worries increase because they had the only link with rest of the State via this river.
The school going children mostly remain indoors during rainy days as parents don't want to risk the lives of their kids.
The parents are worried about their children as they have no guarantee that they can return after school in the afternoon during a rainy day when river is in spate and it inundates it's banks.
The villagers have been demanding construction of bridge over river but to no avail as authorities have other priorities and they are not bothered for the hapless people.
A protection bundh across the river was also given by Flood Control Department to save the adjoining land from being washed away by the floods but it's workmanship was so weak that instead of protecting land this protection wall was itself washed away in flash floods.
The people now cross the river in groups and a person after reaching near the river has to wait till three are four fellow villagers reach the spot so that they can jointly cross the river by holding hands of each other to be saved from being washed away. The residents said they don't see that their worries will ever end as the river spells a doom for them always in Monsoon. Haider Ali another local said that they approached every one in Government but no body was positive in solving their problem.
The people have lost faith in political governments now we appeal to Governor Satya Pal Malik and hope that he may come to our rescue, Ali added.
