SRINAGAR, Nov 1: Lying on a bed in the post surgical ward No 16-A at the SMHS Hospital Srinagar is 35-year-old Zahir ud Din Sarkar. He was one among the six-labourers from Murshidabad West Bengal who were attacked by militants on Tuesday evening at Katrasoo village of district Kulgam in south Kashmir. He is the lone survivor of the attack.
"We were at our rented accommodation when four militants barged into the room. We were led out of rented accommodation by militants. They lined up us then started firing indiscriminately at us," Zahir ud Din said with a feeble voice, while lying on the hospital bed, covered under green sheet.
"Several bullets hit me too. One after another, everyone fell down. After which I don't know who brought me to the hospital. I don't know how I am alive," he said, who is still unaware that his five co-workers and roommates are no more.
He has been coming to Kashmir for last two years and working in the apple orchards and paddy fields as a labourer.
"We did not face any problem over these years. This is for the first time we have been attacked in Kashmir," he added, whose voice is not properly understandable.
Next to him was sitting a policeman in civvies. "He has no attendant here. We are looking after him," the policeman said.
A doctor treating the patients said his condition has been improving for last two days.
"He had multiple bullet injuries and was operated upon for three hours on Tuesday evening. He is stable now," the doctor said.
A police spokesperson has said terrorists fired at six non-local labourers at Katrasoo area of district Kulgam on Tuesday at 8:30 pm.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that terrorists shot dead five civilians and injured one. Slain have been identified as Mursaleen Sheikh, Qamar ud din Sheikh, Rafiq Sheikh, Najam ud din Sheikh, Rafiq ul Sheikh and the injured has been identified as Zahoor ud Din, all residents of West Bengal," the statement said.
