12/31/2019 8:57:24 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 31: There was some respite from chilly weather conditions as the night temperature witnessed major improvement due to overcast conditions ahead of prediction of rain and snow in Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours
However, after witnessing above normal maximum temperature during the last about a week, chill intensified during the day in the valley due to cloudy skies, coupled with ice cold winds.
Despite improvement of about six degree on Monday, border town of Drass was the coldest place in the region at minus 22.6 degree, followed by Leh, where the mercury surged about five degree and settled at 15.4 degree.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching the region though Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit J&K on Tuesday evening.
He said under the influence of this WD, light rain and snow would occur at isolated places in the valley during the next 24 hours. "The weather system will further become strong, resulting in rain and snow at some places for two days from Wednesday," he added.
After witnessing the coldest night of the season so far at minus 6.5 degree on Monday, the night temperature in the summer capital, Srinagar improved and settled at minus 3.2 degree. However, people woke up to a chilly and cloudy Tuesday morning in the city. As the day progressed, chilly weather intensified due to overcast conditions, coupled with ice cold winds.
Local residents in many areas of Srinagar could be seen early in the morning burning wood to de-freeze frozen tapes to restore water supply in their homes. Meanwhile, auto-drivers and transporters, besides mechanics were keeping themselves warm in the morning by burning wood on the road sides.
Despite slight improvement in the night temperature on Tuesday, world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the oldest place in the valley at minus 7.2 degree. Tourists, including foreigners, woke up to a chilly morning in Gulmarg, where ski slopes are under several feet of snow. Adventure loves were enjoying different snow related activities, including skiing, in the ski resort.
Tuckers and transporters burning wood underneath their vehicles to de-freeze diesel was a common scene at Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir valley, where the mercury improved about 4 degree and settled at minus 4.8 degree.
