MCH authorities store blood in vaccine carrier, put patient lives at risk

ANANTNAG, Dec 31: Putting lives of poor patients at risk, the authorities at Maternity and Child Care hospital are blatantly storing blood in vaccine carrier as the blood storage unit has developed snags few months ago.
A video in possession of Early Times shows blood being stored in Ice lined Refrigerator (ILR) which is meant to store vaccines of immunization.
According to Medical experts' vaccines and blood points can't be stored together in a single storage device as both require different temperatures.
"It is unfair to store bloods points and vaccines together in a single storage device as it can harm the both as they require different temperatures," doctors, working at Maternity and Child Care Hospital Anantnag told Early Times, however wished anonymity.
Doctors and experts' said that vaccines require freezing temperatures and in that temperature blood units can get hemolyseid and if hemolised blood is transfused to any patient it can prove harmful for him.
"We raised the issue and conveyed to top authorities about the repercussions of storing blood points in Ice lined Refrigerator (ILR) but they aren't taking the issue seriously," they said.
Highly placed sources within the hospital revealed that a few months ago the blood point storage device development some snag and since then the no effort has been taken to repair the same or procure a fresh storage unit.
Principal Government Medical College Anantnag, Dr Showket Jeelani when contacted told Early Times that it is not allowed to store blood points and vaccines can't be stored in a single storage device or in Ice lined Refrigerator (ILR).
"It is not allowed to store blood units in Ice lined Refrigerator (ILR). I have taken a note of the issue and directed the hospital authorities for procurement of storage unit as the old has developed snag that can't be repaired," he said.
Dr Showket Jeelani has also directed the hospital authorities to start storing blood points at District Hospital Janglatmandi till that fresh storage unit is procured.
Important to mention here, Maternity and Child Care hospital is functioning without blood bank, ventilators, analyzers and laparoscope and face space crunch.
