'Don't sideline J&K, Ladakh people, they deserve a better deal'

Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 31: With transition of the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir into the Union Territory (UT), anyone from across the country can apply for a government job in J&K.
"When the Government of India announced its decision to abrogate Article 370 and bifurcate Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories, people across the J&K had only one concern i.e. the rights of the local residents should be safeguarded," an analyst told Early Times.
He said, "The bogey about Article 371 being implemented in J&K proved to be a mere rhetoric which the local BJP leaders floated to keep the people busy."
The analyst said, "It is unfortunate that politicians who ruled J&K in the past failed to come up with a comprehensive job policy for the youth of Jammu & Kashmir. Had there been a job policy the present dispensation could have picked up threads from there and formulated a strategy to end unemployment in J&K."
He said, "To begin with J&K High Court has opened the doors for candidates from across the country to apply for the 33 non-gazetted posts comprising of Junior Scale Stenographers, Steno Typists, Drivers and others. People of J&K are not against anyone applying for these jobs but our concern is that youth from J&K should not be ignored and they need to be given their due share."
An observer said, "Since the day J&K's special status has been abrogated, people in Jammu region have been demanding that measures need to be taken to protect the interests of locals."
It's in place to mention here that Jammu & Kashmir administration has already made it clear that only the Legislative Assembly of the newly carved out Union Territory of J&K has the powers to come up with a law which can safeguard the interests of the local people.
The observer said, "Legislative Assembly cannot take a shape till the elections are held and polls won't be conducted till the delimitation process is completed. Till then people will have to wait."
He said that since the J&K has started functioning as the Union Territory not many jobs have been announced. "It looks like that the new process will start when the political dispensation in the J&K UT will be at place."
Another analyst said, "New Delhi needs to address the concerns of the people of J&K and Ladakh UTs to ensure that they don't feel left out and sidelined."
