Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 1: The district administration of Srinagar has started retrieval of encroached land in some areas but so far no notice has been served to the revenue officials who facilitated encroachment of water bodies and state land in the city limits.
Early Times has learnt from sources that over the years that some of the Patwaris, Girdawars, Naib Tehsildars and Tehsildars have facilitated encroachment of state land and water bodies in the summer capital of union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. So far no action whatsoever has been taken against these officials and officers of Department of Revenue.
“Humanely speaking it is not possible to encroach upon the state land or water bodies without the official support. Some of the officers and officials of Department of Revenue have amassed huge wealth since they allowed the common masses to grab the state land and water bodies,” said sources.
Sources said that it was due to the support and facilitation of people at helm that common masses were able to encroach upon water bodies and then carry out construction later on. It is due to this reason that size of water bodies like Dal Lake, Wular, Jhelum, Anchar, Khushhalsar, Gilsar and many others has come down drastically.
“It is good that district administration of Srinagar has started action against the people who constructed mansions on Khushhalsar in Eidgah, Zoonimar and other areas of Srinagar city. It is important that at the same time the officials and officers who facilitated the same are taken to task so that it acts as a deterrent,” said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that TehsildarEidgah recently issued final notice to the people who have constructed houses in the Khushhalsar in the various areas of Srinagar. The illegal occupants have been asked to vacate their houses or be ready for the strict action. The Srinagar administration has compiled a list of encroachments and illegal constructions in the district and completed all legal requirements for initiating proceedings of retrieval of encroached state and common lands in the district. Clear-cut instructions have been issued to concerned authorities to take immediate action including initiation of criminal proceedings against encroachers and their eviction and demolition of illegal structures built on state or common land.
On Wednesday after completing relevant formalities the administration swung into action and demolished 10 illegal structures and retrieved over 23 kanals of prime state land from encroachers at Zoonimar estate of Eidgah area in old city. FIRs were also lodged against land grabbers on the occasion.
The Revenue department has identified massive encroachments of land transferred to different departments and is initiating relevant proceedings as part of the action against encroachers aimed at retrieval of the said land.
