Income Tax Deptt conducts TDS workshop for DDOs in Jammu

JAMMU, Feb 4: Income Tax Department, Government of India in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir administration today conducted a Tax deducted at Source (TDS) workshop for DDOs at Convention Center, Canal Road Jammu.
It was the first ever and the largest TDS workshop held in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir.
Around 400 participants from Civil Secretariat Treasury, Saddar Treasury, Additional Treasury, DDOs from CRPF, BSF, Army attended the event besides around 2500 DDOs from Jammu joined through live streaming/webinar.
Financial Commissioner Finance, UT of J&K, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta, was the guest of honour.
The workshop was conducted as part of the Drive by the Income Tax Department to make DDOs aware about correct procedure and deposit of TDS and was an effort towards capacity building exercise of the J&K officials responsible for deduction of tax.
Dr Mehta, in his address highlighted the need for raising awareness besides deduction and deposit of TDS in time. He stated that the administrative approval and technical sanction is a must for all expenditure besides all tendering has to be done through e-tendering and 100 per cent physical verification of work will be done. "The government is moving on an online platform PAYSYS and e-Kuber which will be functional soon in the J&K UT", he added.
In the introductory address, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Poonam Khaira Sidhu, focussed on partnership of Income Tax Department with DDOs and the excellent job being done by them in facilitating the department in collection of taxes and footprints for economic transactions.
She highlighted the threefold duty of DDO- Deduct, Deposit and Online filing of returns. She advised the DDOs to address the outstanding TDS demands pertaining to the UT of J&K at the earliest.
CIT TDS Paresh Johri and his team of officers including Additional CIT Balwinder Kaur, ITO Jammu Anita Thussu and ITO Srinagar Riyaz Ahmed Bhatt made technical presentations and answered queries from the DDOs.
Paresh Johri advised the DDOs to deduct and deposit TDS on time and quote the correct PAN to avoid demands being raised or penalties being imposed. The penalty for non-deduction of an amount equivalent to sum not deducted i.e., double the amount would be payable and fine of Rs 200 per day is payable for late filing of return, he added.
A whatsApp group of all the DDOs will be set up pursuant to the Conference and all technical presentations will be shared thereon. Besides, literature published by the Income Tax Department was shared by the PCIT Jammu and her team.
Other dignitaries present in the workshop included Director General Accounts & Treasuries Mohammad Yousuf Pandit; Director General Transport Department, Mahesh Dass; Director Hospitality & Protocol, Tariq Ahmed Zargar; Additional Secretary Finance, Haris Ahmad Handoo and Director Accounts of Treasuries, Jammu Iftikhar Hussain Chauhan.
The Workshop was a unique collaboration that marks the beginning of more such stakeholder consultations for the Income Tax Department in J&K.
