Sajad Lone, PDP leader Waheed Parra released from preventive detention
2/5/2020 6:59:37 PM

Srinagar , Feb 5
People's Conference leader Sajad Gani Lone and PDP youth wing president Waheed Parra were on Wednesday shifted to their residences from MLA hostel at MA Road in Srinagar.

Lone was shifted to his official residence at Church Lane at Sonwar in Srinagar while Parra was allowed to return home, sources said.

The two were among of the Jammu and Kashmir politicians who were kept in detention after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.

They were first kept in Centaur Hotel on the banks of Dal lake in Srinagar that was converted into a sub jail. Later, after the onset of winter in November, they were moved to MLA hostel.

Thirteen leaders of different parties are still are held at MLA hostel.

Lone and Parra have been released a day after former PDP MLA from Wachi in Pulwama Ajaz Ahmed Mir and former president of Kashmir Federation of Chamber and Industries Shakeel Qalander were released.

Lone had allied with the BJP and called Prime Minister Narender Modi his 'elder brother' during Lok Sabha polls in 2014 and assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir a year later.

He was inducted into cabinet after the BJP and the PDP formed a coalition government.

His father Abdul Gani Lone, former minister and founder of PC, had joined the separatist Hurriyat Conference in 1993.

In 2002, the PD was accused of having fielded a proxy candidate, which had soured his relations with other members of Hurriyat Conference.

In November 2018, Lone had staked claim to form the government by writing a letter to then governor S.P. Malik hours after PDP president Mehbooba Mufti had faxed a letter to Malik claiming support of the NC and Congress to form the government.

Malik, however, dissolved the assembly, which lay in suspended animation after the BJP pulled out of the coalition government in June that year.

Lone had also opposed New Delhi’s moves to tamper with Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. He had attended the all-party meet in Srinagar held at NC president Farooq Abdullah’s residence.

Lone’s elder brother Bilal Lone is a member of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq-led faction of Hurriyat Conference.
