Fresh snowfall in Gulmarg; rain, overcast conditions in plains

Srinagar, Feb 11 After witnessing pleasant weather during the last about a week, the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg received fresh snowfall on Tuesday while rain and cloudy skies in the plains of Kashmir valley, resulting in chilly weather conditions. However, the night temperature improved and settled above normal at majority of the places in the valley, where there is prediction of wet weather during the next 48 hours.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that light snowfall would occur at some places in the valley on Tuesday. "A fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which hit the region on Tuesday, will gain momentum and result in light to heavy snowfall on Wednesday and Thursday in most places in the valley," he added.
Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, received fresh light snowfall in the evening, resulting in dip in the day temperature. Kongdori and Apharwat, the highest point of the cable car project in Gulmarg, also received light to moderate snowfall. "Cloudy weather in the morning followed by light snow in the evening, the tourists are out on ski slopes, which are already covered under several feet of snow, enjoying different activities," a hotelier said over the phone. After witnessing pleasant weather during the last about a week, chilly revisited the summer capital, Srinagar on Tuesday due to overcast conditions. However, the night temperature improved about 3 degree from Monday and settled minus 0.2 degree, which is above normal. People could be seen wearing jackets, sweaters and pheran (traditional Kashmiri cloak), to evade chilly weather conditions in the city.
The skies at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, remained cloudy throughout the day on Tuesday, resulting in dip in the day temperature. But, the night temperature at the health resort improved and settled at minus 5.6 degree, which is above normal. However, the upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, received very light snowfall. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery, besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni, also received light snowfall.
Some parts of Kupwara in north Kashmir also received light rain in the evening, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature. Due to overcast night conduction, the mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag improved and settled at minus 3.8 degree, minus 3.6 degree and minus 1.9 degree, respectively.
