Toll Plazas Looting The Public
Omkar Dattatray2/11/2020 10:30:55 PM
Government is supposed to protect the interests of its subjects particularly in a democratic dispensation. But unfortunately in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and now in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, government is failing in its duty of safeguarding the interests of the people. The government of India and the government of Jammu and Kashmir through the highway authority of India is looting the public through its toll plaza at Ban toll plaza and hurriedly established Sarore toll plaza. The national highway authority of India has violated its own norms of the establishment of the toll plazas after sixty kilometers but both the toll plazas in Jammu have been established within the short distance, thus throwing its own norms to winds. It is unfortunate and high-handedness of the concerned authorities that both the toll plazas in question have been established against the wishes and interests of the people. The only consideration is the minting of the money at the cost of the people. The distance between the Sarore toll plaza and the Ban toll plaza is approximately 37 kilometers and the establishment of the two toll plazas is in violation of all rules, regulations and norms. The public of Jammu has protested against the establishment of Sarore toll plaza and Ban toll plaza but it did not move the rulers who seem to be insensitive to the concerns and interests of the people. The people of Jammu and Kashmir in general and the transport community in particular are facing the brunt of the operation of these toll plazas. In fact both these toll plazas are looting the gullible masses of not only UT of Jammu and Kashmir but the transporters of other states of India as well. The national highway authority of India in collaboration with the private contractors is looting the public and the government is looking as a mute spectator. Some BJP leaders of Jammu and Kashmir UT have raised the genuine issue of doing away of these toll plazas with surface and highway minister but without any positive effect. The people of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir are being deceived and looted by the unscrupulous contractors with the active knowledge of the government. Thus the government is the active player in this deceit and looting of the public pocket .This loot is being carried under the very noose of the government. To ply a four wheeler on the National Highway - 44 is a painful exercise as the people have to part with their hard earned money in their own UT and this is very disturbing and unfortunate. The highway authority of India and the UT government should look into this important peoples matter and find ways and means to abolish the toll plazas in Jammu so that the people of UT will heave a sigh of relief .The people of Jammu have a genuine problem and have naturally become very restive and government of the day should leave their rigid attitude and should abolish the toll plazas of Ban and Sarore and give an immediate relief to the affected people. The private contractors are exploiting the gullible people of the UT and now they are charging more and rebate or concession for those who deposit travel passes. The to and fro charges in lumpsum has been cancelled and thus there is open loot of the people's pockets and government should come to the rescue of the aggrieved people and deliver justice to them by winding of these toll plazas which violate the set norms and rules and regulations. Will the government take a final call on this issue of public importance and work in the direction of abolishing of the toll plazas in the interest of the people. The decision of winding of the Ban and Sarore toll plazas will be in the interests of the people and the government should not force the people to resort to protests and bunds against these toll plazas and instead should work in the best interests of the people and abolish the toll plaza at Ban and Sorore at the earliest. This will be a pro people and pro poor decision. Is the government listening is the moot question?
