2/15/2020 10:50:59 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 15: Cold returned due to winds coupled with morning showers besides cloudy sky on Saturday in the Kashmir valley, where people enjoyed pleasant sunny weather for over a week.
Drass, second coldest place in the world after Siberia, continued to freeze at minus 21.3 degree minimum temperature while water bodies remained frozen in Leh and Kargil.
A Met department spokesman said on Saturday that weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours in the valley. There will be no change during the subsequent 72 hours, he said. However, he said, a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit the region which could result in scattered or isolated rain or snow from February 20.
People in most parts of the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, woke up to a cold morning today due to light showers coupled with winds and cloudy sky. However, sun appeared briefly before finally going behind the cloudy during the day.
Interestingly, the famed health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir people enjoyed sunny day today also. The minimum temperature at Pahalgam, which hosts as base camp for the annual pilgrimage to holy Amarnath cave, was minus 5.8 degree. The water level in the river Lidder remain low as the snow on the mountains was frozen.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where large number of students are learning basic and forward courses in skiing, was coldest at minus 6.6 degree minimum temperature in the valley.
The sky is cloudy and there was no fresh rain or snow, a hotel owner over phone from Gulmarg.
Srinagar continued to witness above normal mercury for the past over a week, much to the relief of people who could be seen in parks and other gardens while children playing games. However, the situation was entirely different this morning when there was light rainfall after recording 1.6 degree minimum temperature, 1.4 notches above normal.
Met spokesman said the sky would remain partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be 11 degree and 3 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar.
Kokernag in south and Kupwara in north recorded minus 2.4 degree and 0.5 degree minimum temperature, he said.
There was no let up in the cold in Drass, a border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway which remained closed for the past about three months due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions. The minimum temperature at Drass was minus 21.3 degree while it was minus 13.2 degree at Kargil and minus 10.7 degree at Leh. He said the sky would be generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be 5 degree and minus 7 degree at Leh during the next 24 hours.
