Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 15: The 2010 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) topper Shah Faesal today became the eight politician from the mainstream camp in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir to be booked under Public Safety Act (PSA).
A person booked under the PSA can be detained without a trial for up to three months and same can be extended.
Before Faesal, seven mainstream politicians belonging to National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been booked under the PSA and they are at present serving detention. The former IAS topper was first lodged at the Centaur hotel located on the banks of world famous Dal Lake and then was shifted to the legislators’ hostel here.
Faesal who floated a new political party in Jammu and Kashmir in 2018 was seen by many as a new ‘star’ on the political horizon of erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir. After the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35-A Faesal had voiced his concern and had in fact asked people to be vigilant claiming that people in large number may be killed if they raised revolt over the same.
It would be in place to mention here that he managed some of the top posts in the bureaucracy of the then state of Jammu & Kashmir. He later on resigned from the country’s elite services as mark of ‘protest’ and said that he cannot continue to work in the atmosphere where he feels ‘stifled’ and ‘suffocated’.
The last Governor of Jammu & Kashmir state Satya Pal Malik had said that resignation of Faesal has not been accepted and he can join the IAS as and when he feels comfortable. Malik said that since Faesal is an ‘asset’ he can do wonders in Jammu & Kashmir while discharging his duties at different positions in the bureaucracy.
Before Faesal three time chief minister and present Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Srinagar, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are among the mainstream leaders booked under the PSA by the authorities. The other leaders booked under PSA so far include NC’s General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, NC leader Hilal Akbar Lone, PDP leaders Sartaj Madni and Naeem Akhtar.
Pertinently, Omar’s sister Sara Abdullah Pilot had moved Supreme Court over her brother’s detention and booking under the PSA. The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Jammu & Kashmir in the matter and the case has been listed on March 2 for further hearing.
