Hospitals’ sanitation still a big challenge for administration
2/15/2020 11:34:43 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Feb 15: The tall claims of the authorities concerned on management of the Tertiary Healthcare have fallen flat as the Secondary and Primary hospitals across Jammu are plagued with poor sanitation and hygiene. Proper management of the hospitals have become a tough task due to which they are causing great inconvenience to the patients as well as to the staff.
Moreover, the heavy rush of attendants also increase the burden on the hospitals as with more and more visitors the toilets of such health institutions most of the time remain unclean as there is scarcity of sanitation workers.
Here need to mention that in most of the government-run hospitals, there are three types of the sanitation staff working (Own sanitation workers, Laundry workers and Sulabh Shauchalaya staff) to keep hospitals as well as toilets clean but the condition of the wards and toilets in majority of blocks is pathetic despite spending huge money on them.
“Recently, I went to a Tertiary Care Hospital in Jammu to see my relative who was hospitalized there, but I was shocked to see the mess there. There was so much dust everywhere and when I went to the washroom, I felt so sorry for the poor families who cannot afford to get to private hospitals. Instead of making primary concern as kids and the elderly may get infected due to the unhygienic conditions, the management of the hospital has taken it for granted,” a visitor said.
Another attendant, who is living in Delhi for the last 15 years, told that he rushed to Medical College after receiving information that a close friend of his was admitted to the hospital due to a minor attack. “I did not know the shocking surprise I would meet at the hospital. The hygiene and the cleanliness at the emergency ward were horrible. Litter lay scattered in the corridors. Seeing the poor state of affairs, the family decided to rush to private hospitals just because of poor sanitation,” he claimed, adding that if they had not decided to explore other options then any tragedy could have happened.
He asked questions that what a sheer wastage of national resources, the tax money of the taxpayers! What is the benefit of such government hospitals which are as good as nothing? Why does the government not privatize such hospitals? He stressed that these hospitals should be either given to private companies or managed properly.
