Don’t ignore sufferings of Old Satwari inhabitants: Munish urges admin
Residents demand better civic amenities, end to their problems

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Apr 11: Lamenting the authorities for continuous neglect of Old Satwari area, the Editor, Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Saturday said that this part of the city is still bearing the brunt of step motherly treatment of official machinery as the residents are devoid of civic amenities.
Munish said that it is ironic but as the city is getting developed the lives of the residents living in several localities under municipal limits here are getting miserable with each passing day.
“It’s disheartening to see that Old Satwari an area in close proximity to Jammu Airport is still yearning for basic necessities. Development is meant for the betterment of society in general and common masses in particular but in case of Jammu city it has worsened the situation here,” said Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency.
“The Old Satwari area has been facing grave civic problems for a long time now. Authorities should address the grievances of the residents without any further delay,” he added.
Munish urged the authorities not to keep a myopic view as far as making provisions of better basic civic amenities in areas like Old Satwari in Jammu city. “I appeal the administration not to further ignore the sufferings of the residents as these innocent people are going through an upheaval,” he said.
Meanwhile, the residents of Old Satwari while talking to Early Times said that they seek better civic amenities for their locality so as to get rid of the numerous problems being faced by them.
“We demand permanent spots for garbage dumps and provision of dustbins, better upkeep of the entire locality, repair and maintenance of broken drains, decongestion of choked drains and above all the cleaning as well as restoration of interior roads which have damaged over the years,” said a resident, Darshan Lal.
“The condition of the interior roads is really deplorable and need to be re-carpeted either with charcoal or cemented tiles,” said another resident, Kewal Kumar, adding that the pot-holed roads are taking a heavy toll not only of the residents but their vehicles as well.
Several residents complained in one voice that there is nobody to listen to their plight with regard to improper civic amenities. They charged the officials for not responding to their oft-repeated pleas to improve civic amenities.
Urging the team of Early Times to bring to light their miseries, a resident, Sham Lal said, “Please highlight our problems so that the concerned authorities should be forced to take corrective measures and we are able to heave a sigh of relief.”
Few others said that the drainage system in the area is not proper while they also pointed towards the bad shape of roads as well as streets and the poor state of sanitation.
“Drainage constructed long ago is almost defunct for many reasons including blockage and poor maintenance. As the drains are choked with filth, the dirty water flows on to the street roads which not only damages them but also emanates foul smell,” said Pratap Singh.
Several residents raised the issue of pollution, dust and unhygienic conditions of the area adding that the heaps of garbage dumps lying in open are health hazards but the concerned authorities hardly pay any attention for its removal.
“The pollution, dust and lack of hygiene in our locality have worsened with time due to which several people now suffer from certain ailments. It is so absurd that we have to pay back through our health for negligence of the authorities. Day by day our locality is getting covered into so much of dust that it is almost becoming difficult for the locals to live here anymore,” said Anil Kumar.
Another resident, Sham Lal also seconded such views by saying, “Majority of interior roads in our locality are damaged to such an extent that there is only dust on surface. Whenever a vehicle ply over broken roads the dust blows in every direction due to which sometimes it becomes difficult to breathe properly. The floating dust particles are not at all good for the health of the inhabitants. The threat of so many diseases affecting them due to dust is always lurking nearby.”
While summing up their grievances, a resident, Virender Singh said, “Our priorities among many are to get carpeted roads, desilting of unclean and overflowing drains, functional streetlights and collection of garbage on regular basis so that we may get rid of insanitary conditions prevailing in the area.”
