Early Times Report
jammu, Apr 11: Despite increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases and vulnerability of the frontline workers, the field staff of the Power Development Department (PDD) has been firm on their duties but government has failed to provide them safety kits or pay them salary.
The employees of PDD, who are on deputation to the newly created Corporation informed Early Times that the field division staff who were engaged in maintenance of supply lines, as well as collection of rent from the customers have been doing their duties without any break since the lockdown.
These field staff workers have to visit various localities as well as climbing the poles for maintenance of the electric lines as well as to interact with the customers to collect the rent. "The department has given target to the field workers and to achieve the targets the field staff has to visit the localities, making them more vulnerable to catch the infection", the employees said, adding that those employees who have been engaged in field functions required proper safety gear including hand gloves as well as N-95 masks but so far no such safety gear has been provided by the department.
The employees further said that in absence of any safety gear from the department, the employees have been managing the safety gear on their own.
The employees further said that despite working in the lockdown situations, even the salary has not been paid to them. "Some of the employees have been provided the salary by the Corporation but the all staff members including senior officials of ED-I, ED-II and ED-III have not been paid the salary", the employees said.
There are around 600 employees including officials in one Division and in the three divisions nearly 1800 employees have been without salary even today. "The salary of February month was also paid by the department in mid-March", the employees said, adding that since the constitution of Corporation the salary to the employees and officials have not been paid timely due to reasons best known to the authorities.
The employees appealed the government to issue instructions to the department for providing safety gear as well as salary to the employees without any further delay.
Managing Director Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) Yasha Mudgal didn't pick her phone for comments.
