Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 17: 9th day of ongoing Natrang’s online Theatre Festival witnessed a well-knitted performance of Hindi play ‘Comedy of Terrors’ written by Dario Fo, thoughtfully adapted by Piyush Mishra and Ranjeet Kapur and effectively Directed by Sanjeev Gupta.
This virtual theatre festival of Natrang during the time of Social Distancing has been instrumental in taking its creative work to the global audience. To run such a festival for so many days requires a vast collection of quality work which was once appreciated by live audience only then it qualifies to be showcased to the worldwide audience through internet. Director Natrang, Balwant Thakur hoped that things get normal very soon and the same festival be performed in front of live audiences as well. Introducing Sanjeev Gupta, Balwant Thakur informed that he is a post graduate in dramatics and is decorated with Yuva Bilmillah Khan Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for direction in Theatre. Sanjeev is currently working as Cultural Officer in J&K Academy of Art Culture and Languages.
The story of the play 'Comedy of Terrors' revolves around an industrialist 'Bidla' who has liaison with ultras. He also happens to be involved in series of bomb blasts that rocked Bombay few years back. To escape official interest and to get few undesirable demands met, he masterminds his own abduction. While carrying out his plan, he meets with a grave road accident.
Shaligram, a welder and Union leader in the factory of 'Bidla' is witness to that gory accident. The impact of accident is such that car catches fire and face of 'Bidla' is burnt beyond recognition. Oblivious to the fact that person concerned is his employer, Shaligram wraps the victim in his own coat to put out fire and takes him to the hospital.
In hospital, Bidla' is mistaken by doctors as Shaligram and in cosmetic surgery the face of Shaligram is done up (grafted) on 'Bidla'. Police nabs Shaligram for Bidla's abduction and Shaligram is implicated and harassed for a crime, which was never committed. Charismatic acting of Anil Tickoo alongwith other senior actors of Natrang was a treat to watch.
On Saturday, the 10th day of this online festival Balwant Thakur’s highly acclaimed children play ‘Mere Hisse Ki Dhoop Kaha Hai’ would be featured.
