EARLY TIMES REPORT

KISHTWAR, May 7: After facing numerous complaints of corruption in the past, the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj has moved several steps forward to minimize malpractices in the department particularly in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
With this aim, the government now has introduced various checks and balances in the scheme by introducing use of Technology in the form of Geo Tagging which not only helps in checking the execution of works on ground but also helps the top government officials to monitor the progress of various developmental activities under RDD&PR while sitting in any part of the country. “With the introduction of technology, corruption in MGNREGA will drop drastically which not only has given sleepless night to several politicians who were using it as their fiefdom as they were diverting the funds actually meant for poor and needy into the coffers of their political workers. Beside their political clout was also helping the corrupt employees to become millionaires as they were habitual of toeing their lines and fulfilling their political agenda,” said an observer.
He said that now MGNREGA has modified itself and within a couple of years the department has managed to put all its activities online on a government portal giving access to each and every one.
“It has given ample time to the people to react in case there is any discrepancy. On the other hand the use of technology has also helped in minimizing the level of corruption. But at the same time several political activists who run their shops through RDD have suddenly become jobless as their business has got closed,” he added.
Now, with the closing of tuck shops, these political activists, who used to get due share of corruption from the department had gone haywire and are often seen blackmailing the honest employees of the department who heaved a sigh of relief during the incumbent Lt Governor’s rule and want to work with integrity and dedication.
“From where we get money now and fill the coffers of the hundreds of political workers who become habitual in past of getting corrupt share from the department,” said an employee of the department wishing anonymity.
Aijaz Ahmed Sheikh, President GRS Association Kishtwar said that the officials are now following all the guidelines after PRIs come into existence adding that after Gram Sabha, the plan is being finalized with the consent of Sarpanchs and Panchs as they now have full powers to check and monitor status of works on ground.
