Experts for utilizing lockdown for development activities in Jammu 5/8/2020 12:53:32 AM Early Times Report Jammu, May 7: With the City of Temples having shown the way to overcome Covid19 through display of exemplary discipline that brought the deadly ailment almost to an end in the region, experts say it’s high time for government to start development activities in the city here and elsewhere across the winter capital province. Developmental experts said it was high time for the government to go for massive upgradation of drainage network and blacktopping of roads in Jammu city. “This lockdown has given an opportunity to undertake development activities especially blacktopping of roads, and drains drainage,” said a senior official in the Public Works Department. He said several other areas in the country including Hyderabad and Goa are working on the model and that a proposal in this regard was under consideration in Jammu and Kashmir as well. The PWD officials said when cement factories in Kashmir have resumed production and many of the industries are also working, what should prevent the government from undertaking development activities in Jammu. “If despite continued rise in number of cases in Kashmir, the industrial activities are being resumed, what should prevent the concerned from using lockdown to give much-needed facelift to Jammu?” asked a senior official in the Housing and Urban Development Department. Sources said the Traffic Police and the Roads and Building Department have already conveyed that lockdown was ideal time to undertake blacktop in Jammu as otherwise the city roads remain congested with traffic day and night. “Lockdown is perfect time to undertake blacktopping in Jammu and the results will be even better as there is no such impediment of traffic flow which otherwise often affects the work,” said an executive engineer.
