BEING ‘VOCAL FOR LOCAL’: PM’s TAKE AWAY FROM COVID-19
5/13/2020 11:58:00 PM
Dr. Parveen Kumar, Dr. D. Namgyal

Hon’ble Primeminister of India Sh. Narendra Modi while in his address to the nation talked of the global threat to the humanity due to the corona virus called as ‘COVID-19’. One virus has caused the whole destruction. No one never heard nor could have ever imagined that the humanity has to suffer from this deadly and highly infectious virus. As on date more than 42 lakh persons have been infected from this virus where as more than 2.75 lakh peoples have already died due to this novel virus. In our country too, the nationwide disease load due to this virus has crossed 74,000 mark with the death toll reaching 3,000.
There is also a silver lining also as more than 22,000 recoveries have been made. According to Mr. Harshvardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, while the doubling time in 14 days was 10.9 days, it has improved to 12.2 days in the last three days. Fatality rate is stable at 3.2 per cent and recovery rate has risen to 31.74 per cent. As of couple of days back there were 2.37 per cent active COVID-19 patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), 0.41 per cent on ventilators and 1.82 per cent on oxygen support. India’s per day testing capacity is one lakh now and about 17, 62, 840 tests have been done so far.
Addressing the nation for the fifth time since the outbreak of COVID-19, the prime minister rightly said that that every threat provides us an opportunity. He recalled how when the first incidence of the disease was reported, the country had not even a single personal protection equipment and only a few N95 masks were available; but now the country is producing two lakh of these products every day. Due to this step, India is being praised across the world and the Indians feel proud.
The world has started believing that India can perform much better. The medicine Hydroxychloroquine besides treating our own COVID-19 victims has been sent to more than 100 countries. Local has saved us. It is not only our necessity, but our responsibility too. Hon’ble PM has made a big pitch for indigenous products, saying it would be a huge contributing factor to an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ a self-reliant India.
The corona virus pandemic has taught ‘India is to become self-reliant, and that the skills and knowledge of people are put to test during the time of a crisis. The corona virus crisis has ‘taught us the importance of local manufacturing, market and supply chain’, PM Modi in the special address on Tuesday evening also announced a huge financial package. Local helped us through the crisis and helped us to survive.
We have to make local our motto. Primeminister recalled that global brands began locally. But when their people started marketing, branding and praising, they became global. Every Indian should become vocal for local. Don't just buy, but promote, Primeminister quoted the example of ‘Khadi’ and said that he proudly feel that his request to the countrymen to ‘Khadi’ and support handloom workers has resulted in their demand and selling them touching the roof. Peoples made it a global brand.
The Prime Minister's call to create a self-reliant India is very different from the isolationist and protectionist self-reliance movements across the worlds. Self-reliance in PM Modi's vision for India is neither exclusionary nor isolationist.
It relates specifically of improving efficiency, competing with the world as well as helping the world, a source said.
The five pillars of self reliant India according to the prime minister are the economy that will bring a quantum jump instead of incremental changes, the infrastructure that will make a modern India, a system that will be technology driven to fulfill dreams of 21st century and ensure that the benefits percolate deep down to the last man in the row, a vibrant democracy that will strengthen further the capacity of the country and finally the fifth pillar of demand that will have optimum usage linked with supply chain. The Primeminister has also announced a rupees 20 lakh crore package for the country for the labourers, farming community, honest tax payers, Medium, Small and Micro Enterprises (MSMEs). The rupees 20 lakh crore package is one tenth of the country GDP and is one of the largest packages. It will give a new steam to self reliant India.
With the government of India allowing the stranded passengers to return to their native states, fears are there that there would be a spike in the number of cases. At this crucial juncture it becomes necessary for the respective state governments to step up efforts to focus on effective tracing, testing and treatment of the disease. The scientists and experts all over the world have reported that the virus is going to be part of our lives for a long time.
We have to learn to live with this virus. At the same time it is also important to ensure that our life does not revolve only around it. Peoples have to ensure that their work does not suffer and while doing work they do not get expose themselves to this deadly virus.
All the necessary precautions like wearing masks and maintaining ‘do gaz doori’ have to be taken to work towards achieving our targets. As the third phase of lockdown ends on May 17 and Hon’ble has already hinted that lockdown fourth lockdown fourth phase will be of different colours, we should not lower our guard against COVID-19.
