Noble gesture of Police in Kathua turns awful
Overthrowing norms, cops gather to celebrate child’s birthday under full media glare

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, May 13: Taking inspiration from the noble gesture shown by the police force of other states, which celebrated the birthday of children confined to four walls of their houses due to lockdown, a senior police officer along with half a dozen policemen visited a family and celebrated their child’s birthday but the noble gesture of the police turned awful, when the physical distancing norms were found totally violated, along with some other serious loopholes in the initiative.
The incident occurred in one of the wards of Kathua town, when around half a dozen policemen headed by a senior police officer visited the family. The police team had brought a cake along with some other eatables and instead of handing over it to the family as a noble gesture, the initiative was given full media coverage, which is evident from the video shot by the cameraman, who was present in advance at the scene and even shot the vehicle of police coming to the house.
As the police team entered the house, the media personnel were, inside the house, recording the video. Instead of offering the cake at the gate to the family, as the family had already completed 14 days quarantine period, the police team went straight into the house and all the family members could be seen standing in the lobby of the house.
The physical distancing norms were found be thrown to winds as in a small space over one dozen people could be seen standing along with media-personnel, who were recording the event. As per health advisories and the guidelines of the lockdown, the public has been instructed to avoid social gatherings but the event was not less than a social gathering.
“The police personnel are the frontline workers, who have been most vulnerable to infection and have been visiting all the areas.
These personnel should avoid visiting the families and the noble gesture of the police could have been accomplished without even visiting the family and by offering the cake at the gate but it is beyond comprehension as why the guidelines have been violated while visiting the home”, an official said, adding that police personnel have already been doing a noble job and even if they wanted to help the people more by such noble gestures, the physical distancing norms, should be followed as well as by avoiding public gatherings.
