Politicians to remain unemployed
5/13/2020 11:58:17 PM
Politicians in Jammu and Kashmir will have to remain out of power for some more time as the outbreak of COVID-19 has put a big question mark on revival of the political activities in the Union Territory.
Soon after the pandemic reached India and Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, announced a nationwide lockdown a few politicians saw it as an opportunity to indulge in self promotion by acting as philanthropists. Instead of following social distancing they started moving within their constituencies to distribute relief among the needy. But their move proved nothing more than a publicity stunt as they left no stone unturned to publicize the work they were doing. They uploaded the videos and pictures on social media and also ensured that their activities get good coverage in local media.
It seems that many of them had thought that by doing so-called social work within their constituencies they can consolidate their vote bank. Most of them were hoping that elections will be held by this year end and they could project helping needy during pandemic as one of their achievements.
According to the media reports assembly elections in J&K won’t be held this year as the government won’t take any chances as and when the COVID-19 curve flattens. The local leaders in Jammu and Kashmir have been sitting idle since June 2018, when the PDP-BJP coalition in the erstwhile State of J&K crumbled under its own weight. Since then many major political developments have taken place in J&K. However, the setting up of Delimitation Commission had made everyone believe that the political process will be revived soon as the parties will make every attempt to find their footing. But the COVID-19 outbreak has pushed all the processes on the back burner.
Since the day politicians have realized that elections won’t be held so soon, they have taken a backseat and their philanthropist activities too have stopped to a great extent. It seems they have realized that there are no chances of getting their jobs back and doing something without any gain is of no use.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that lockdown-IV will be different from first three phases is an indication that the prevailing uncertainty will continue and government won’t like to put the lives of people at risk by allowing political rallies and gatherings. For time being politicians will have to remain content by sitting on the fence.
