EARLY TIMES REPORT

NOWSHERA, June 8: The government had made bunkers for the people living across the border to save themselves from the shelling and bullets coming from Pakistan side but shockingly the bunkers, which were constructed by PWD Nowshera turned out unfit for use due to faulty design and substandard material used for their construction.
The constructions of bunkers in Deeing-Kalal panchayat of Nowshera Sub Division are not up to the mark, which can be gauged from the fact that the cemented plaster on these bunkers crumble on touching them and water remain filled in these bunker due to faulty design making unfit for use despite spending lakhs of rupees on these bunkers.
Sources told Early Times that the conditions of these bunkers are so bad that during Pak shelling, these bunkers remain without due to 5-6 feet deep water. Most of these bunkers are not even complete due to apathy of the concerned department.
“Although, the responsibility for construction of bunkers has been given to PWD and RDD but here in Deeing-Kalal panchayat, the bunkers were constructed but PWD Nowshera,” they said.
The locals alleged that there is a huge scam in construction of these bunkers as substandard materials have been used and water inside these bunkers has turned them into fishing ponds. They further alleged that the careless approach of the department can be gauged from the fact the contractors, who were allotted works further sublet the work and even no engineers visited the spot to assess the quality of construction .
“There is no benefit of these bunkers despite spending lakhs and an inquiry should be initiated to find the corrupt officials,” they said. They appealed to the LG in order to take action against the senior officials, who adopted a casual approach in construction.
Executive Engineer PWD Nowshera Prem Kumar, when contacted, he said that he would personally visit the spot to find out facts.
