EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, June 15: As on one side the COVID-19 pandemic exposes the poor state of health affairs not only in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, but in the entire country while at the same time this disease also brought into light the major infrastructural lapses in both government and private schools in terms of accommodation, toilet facilities as well as fire safety norms.
As per the details available with Early Times, thousands of people who were kept in various quarantine centers at different places in Kishtwar and Doda District, established mostly in government and private schools mocks at poor facilities in schools.
Speaking to Early Times, the people who spent sleepless nights in quarantine centers informed about poor conditions of toilets and wash rooms in both private and government schools adding that many schools with over 500 enrolled students lack toilet complex as well as other facilities as a result of which the people kept in these quarantine center face lot of hardships.
They informed that several private schools lack several basic facilities which are necessary for these institutions at the time of getting permission to run the schools.
Some of the people also complained about reputed private schools functional within Municipal Council limits as well as in outskirts with enrolment ranging from 500 to 1000 students have no proper toilet complex and washrooms and not to forget about availability of fire safety norms and other facilities required for running the schools.
Several private schools have no play grounds, no doors and windows adding that these schools are functional at stone’s throw away distance from each other while as per government norms, the schools must be separated at least by the distance of one kilometre from government schools.
They said that some private schools even don’t have any availability of drinking water inside school premises while some have illegally hooked water connections without paying a single penny to government as water usage charges while at the same time they charge huge fee from the students on account of various activities.
“I have noticed a residential house inside school complex that has been designated as quarantine center. This is really appalling,” said a person who remains affiliated with COVID-19 duty.
Similar is the condition with government schools that also lacks basic facilities despite government spending crores of rupees on these schools for toilets and other facilities but same were embezzled particularly in Drabshalla education zone where crores of rupees were allegedly swindled by the nexus of officials who without construction of the toilet complexes withdrew the money.
Speaking to Early Times, senior official in education department admitted major lapses in granting permission to private schools, adding that that government must review the infrastructure and other facilities required for establishment of schools.
He also called for cancellation of registration of all the private schools who lacks infrastructure and did not fall within the ambit that are necessary for running the school or any other educational institutions.
