Stage set for SMC Mayor’s floor test, all eyes on Congress party
6/15/2020 11:32:45 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, June 15: Stage is set for the for floor test of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor Junaid Azam Mattu on Tuesday, with all eyes on Congress during No-Confidence Motion.
As per the official, no-confidence motion was filed by Waheed Dar, who is a councilor from Zakura along with 42 councilors against Mayor SMC last week.
He added that the session will start on 11:00 AM on Tuesday for voting over no confidence motion regarding which a notification has been Srinagar Municipal Corporation for holding special session of its general council on June 16.
Reports said that the Deputy Mayor SMC is empowered to call on holding the session when no-confidence motion is moved against the Mayor SMC.
As per the reports, there are 70 councilors in SMC, while as Congress has 16 councilors in the SMC National Conference has 11 councilors who had joined the party in May 2019 after winning as independents during the polls held in 2018 by Governor Satya Pal Malik-led administration, four seats are vacant.
Whereas, National Conference has already made it clear it does not have any understanding with BJP in Srinagar Municipal Corporation, all eyes will be on Congress party during the voting. In a tweet, National Conference had last week clarified that they don’t have any understanding with BJP in Srinagar Municipal Corporation or elsewhere.
Although Congress has distanced itself from No Motion Confidence against Mayor and claimed it won't be part of any such process, reports said that the party has constituted a five-member committee to hold talks with its councilors before unveiling its strategy for the polls.
Last week members of BJP had said that they are supporting no- confidence motion against Mattu.
BJP Media In-charge Manzoor Bhat had said, “We have 27 councilors in Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Of them, four were elected on the party’s ticket and 23 joined us after winning the election as independent candidates and yes we are supporting no confidence motion against the SMC Mayor.
