Stop beating around the bush
6/26/2020 11:29:37 PM

The move of Bharatiya Janata Party to support the ouster of Junaid Mattu the former Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) seems to have not worked as per the plan. The former SMC Mayor had lost the BJP-backed no confidence motion against him earlier this month following which he stepped down.
When the hectic political activities were taking place within the SMC the BJP leaders had created a notion that the next Mayor of Srinagar will be from the saffron party. However, it appears that cracks have surfaced within the J&K unit of BJP about who should be the next Mayor. Initially it looked like that BJP is supporting the former Deputy Mayor of Srinagar, Sheikh Imran, for the post. But after the ouster of Junaid Mattu the saffron party seems to have dragged its feet and Imran doesn’t seem to be fitting into the new scheme of things.
According to the media reports the J&K BJP leadership has turned reluctant vis-à-vis Sheikh Imran. He (Imran) was arrested by the Anti-Corruption- Bureau for his alleged involvement in a loan scam and that case is still going on. The former Deputy Mayor of Srinagar prior to J&K’s reorganization on August 5, 2019, used to call himself as “Mujahid” and he had even changed his name on the social media.
The prevailing indecisiveness in the party has once again proved that BJP leaders in J&K are incapable of taking any decision on their own. The SMC is just a corporation and instead of supporting a controversial man for the Mayor’s post, the party can nominate any of its leaders and then get the floor test done. These are basics of politics and one believes that by now the BJP should have learnt it.
The BJP leaders in J&K should realize that they represent a national party and it happens to be a ruling party. They should stop looking towards party high command for taking small decisions like who could be their candidate for Mayor’s post. Rallying around people like Sheikh Imran and others and projecting them as heroes is not helping BJP’s cause. Such actions to an extent are making people believe that the BJP leaders lack competence to take any decision and they always want to look for someone whom they can use to fulfill their ambitions in Kashmir. The BJP leaders in the Valley should stop beating around the bush and at least make an attempt to make their presence felt.
