EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, June 26: In the midst of COVID-19, a group of medical students in Jammu and Kashmir have bagged PG (Post Graduate) seats allegedly after submitting fake Economically Weaker Section (EWS) certificates.
Highly placed sources told Early Times that the medical students mostly from South Kashmir and Srinagar have acquired EWS certificates fraudulently as their families are affluent and rich.
They have acquired EWS certificates fraudulently and secured seats under EWS category. They have snatched away the opportunity from those who really need it,” a group of candidates told Early Times, however they wished anonymity.
The aggrieved candidates, who demand investigation into the matter, have approached few Deputy Commissioners and Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch.
“We have emailed our grievances to DC Pulwama, DC Anantnag and Crime Branch as well and we hope the matter will be investigated,” they said.
The group has written to Deputy Commissioner Pulwama and informed him that a candidate (name withheld), who too has secured a PG Seat, was possessing EWS certificate that he has managed fraudulently as he has submitted false information with the revenue department.
In another case, they said, a medical student from Anantnag also managed to get an EWS certificate from the revenue officials in the district despite the fact that the candidate is economically sound and has purcured MMB from Bangladesh.
“The candidate from Anantnag, who has managed to secure a seat in EWS category on EWS certificate, is son of a retired accounts officer. The family is financially strong,” they said.
Similarly they said that another candidate from Srinagar is from an affluent family, while her husband is pursuing PG Anesthesia at GMC Srinagar. They said the families own costly bungalows at different locations in Srinagar. “We have so far identified around 12 candidates who have secured seats on EWS certificates and all of them come from affluent families,” the group claimed.
Aggrieved candidates said that NEET examination is held for MBBS, PG (MD/MS) and 10% candidates are being selected under EWS Category, however these certificates are being issued in favor of undeserving candidates mostly to children to officers and doctors.
They said that this year Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE) introduced EWS category during the second round of counseling to provide opportunity to those candidates who come from weaker sections of society but they have been denied the opportunity while influential and rich took all the benefits.
