As COVID roars in JK, Govt mulling to re-impose lockdown
7/11/2020 11:55:31 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 11: Amid the drastic surge in COVID-19 positive cases in Jammu and Kashmir, the administration is seriously weighing the options of re-imposing the lockdown in the union territory.
Sources within the dispensation divulged that there are voices of concern being heard from all corners about how much important it is to re-impose lockdown in Jammu and Kashmir due to the spike in cases being witnessed across the erstwhile state.
As per the government figures, there are more than 9,501 confirmed cases with those who have recovered so fare is 5,695 and 154 people have been killed. “This is unprecedented and there has to be concrete measures taken to tackle this. Or else the day is not far when this pandemic will turn apocalyptic to the core. Lockdown is necessary and this is what has been communicated to the government by various departments concerned directly with the ongoing situation,” says an official privy to the development.
He added that the government is mulling to avoid overcrowding of the markets, public places and offices. According to him, a proposal is being considered to revert to the previous guidelines in accordance to which government offices were asked to ensure mere 33 percent of the attendance on daily basis. “From June 6, this year, the offices were asked to go for 100 percent of attendance again. it was the decision taken to make the situation more conducive for the government offices to perform sans any hindrance. However, the spike in the COVID cases is compelling us to rethink and take the decisions afresh,” the official said.
Reports inform that the government is mulling to re-impose the lockdown in view of the Eid festival which is scheduled to be celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir on July 31. “The markets will again be over crowded and so will be the religious places. These places could act as hotspots for the Virus to spread. This is the reason why lockdown again in parts is imperative to contain the spread of COVID 19 in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir,” official sources divulged.
It was informed further that a meeting in this regard has been held with senior officers advocating for the re-imposition of the lockdown in various districts and particularly those areas which have been declared as red zones by the district administrations. There are, as per the reports, chances that an important announcement in this regard will be made within 3 to 5 days.
