EARLY TIMES REPORT

POONCH, Oct 3: The Municipal Committee (MC) Surankote in Poonch district has come under scanner for irregularities in expenditure of funds under 14th Financial Commission on various works, consequently the demand for Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) inquiry is picking up momentum.
Sources told Early Times that huge financial irregularity of funds is alleged to have taken place in 2018 in the office under 14th FC plan. Besides, embezzlement of funds was observed under Swatchh Bharat Mission (SBM) in 2016, wherein funds for making toilets were issued to those people, who had already toilets at their homes and the officials allegedly took commissions for issuance of toilets.
They further said that corruption has been ruling the roost in several Municipal bodies of Poonch and Rajouri districts as there are many officers including Junior Engineers and Inspectors, who have been sitting at their present posts for more than decades, which is one of the root causes of growing corruption.
The functioning of Surankote MC has badly affected as the Executive Officer has been given additional charge of Rajouri also as a result of which officers are hardly seen present in the office due to which visitors have to face huge problems in getting their works done. “It has been observed that an Inspector has been handling the affairs in place of EO,” they added. The MC has also come in limelight for furnishing wrong reply under RTI Act to an information seeker. The local citizens demanded the ACB probe into the affairs of MC Surankote.
When EO Surankote was contacted and asked about providing wrong information in response to an RTI, the officer said that he can’t do anything and it is better to approach Director ULB, Jammu.
