LAHDC elections: Thupstan Chhewang’s role to decide fate of BJP candidates
10/3/2020 11:33:42 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 3: Even as party candidates today filed their nomination papers for prestigious elections of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh, fate of BJP candidates are in the hands of veteran leader Thupstan Chhewang, who has formed the Apex Body of People’s Movement (ABPM).
As of now Chhewang has announced to remain neutral in the electioneering but his role in the coming days will decide the fate of all candidates, especially those of BJP because he has influence on the people of Leh.
After facing revolt of senior leaders due to ‘wrong’ distribution of the tickets, BJP candidates are now anxiously waiting for the next action of ABPM- which has launched agitation on the issue of Sixth schedule. ABPM leaders had recently visited Delhi and met with Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, who has given them an assurance to fulfill their demand.
BJP leadership heaved a sigh of relief after ABMP leaders announced to withdraw their call of boycotting LAHDC elections following a fruitful meeting with Union Home Minister.
BJP’s Lok Sabha member from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, who is party’s president of the UT, is working assiduously to make sure that Chhewang remains neutral through-out the elections.
Elections to LAHDC are held every five years. The BJP has 18 seats in the outgoing 30-member council, while the Congress five and NC two.
Former Lok Sabha member of BJP, Thupstan Chhewang has formed the ABPM to seek constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule on the lines of north-eastern states. The umbrella group includes political and religious organisations and the Ladakh Buddhist Association. It is also seeking legislative powers for two councils in Leh and Kargil. Saturday is the last day for filing of nominations for the 30-seat council.
The scrutiny of nominations will be held on October 5. October 7 is the last day for withdrawal of nominations.
Congress has already announced candidates for the LAHDC elections under the leadership of former minister Nawang Rigzin Jora. Similarly Aam Adami Party (AAP) has also decided to test water in the mountainous region.
