‘Not a gang, nor enemies of the nation’: Farooq Abdullah defends Gupkar Alliance of J&K parties
11/10/2020 12:00:05 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 9: National Conference patron and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Monday hit out at those who were labelling the Gupkar Alliance parties as a “gang”. Farooq further said that as against being projected, they are not enemies of the nation but a believer in India of Mahatama Gandhi.
“We're not a gang but an alliance of parties. Those who call us a gang are the biggest dacoits, so they see everyone as a gang...” Farooq said.
The NC leader said parties which are part of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) cannot fight on a single election symbol, which is why they will be putting up joint candidates during the upcoming District Development Council (DDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir. “We'll fight election together but we can't get one single election symbol, so we'll contest on our respective symbols with joint candidates,” Farooq informed.
Seven mainstream parties of Jammu and Kashmir have come together to form the PAGD on October 15. The alliance has been formed with an objective to seek the restoration of the erstwhile state’s special status.
National Conference, People’s Democratic Party, People’s Conference, Awami National Conference, CPM, CPI and J&K People’s Movement are part of the amalgam.
Hitting out at the BJP, Farooq said the national party was trying to divide the people on the basis of religion.
“We're not the nation's enemies. We're enemies of the BJP. They want to isolate Hindus, Muslim, Sikhs and Christians from each other. We believe in India of Mahatma Gandhi - where everyone is equal,” he said.
Farooq had yesterday asserted that the Congress was also part of the grouping and that they would contest the DDC polls in Jammu and Kashmir "together". The Congress has so far not reacted to the remarks, but the BJP has already demanded answers from the national party.
The Congress had earlier decided to put up candidates for the upcoming elections.
