NNK stages Dogri play Macbeth
12/30/2020 10:21:10 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 30: Natraj Natya Kunj, Cultural Society Jammu, today performed Dogri adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy play Macbeth; The Crown Of Blood at Studio Ranglok Bakshi Nagar Jammu.
Supported by Sangeet Natak Akademi New Delhi, the play is a story of Macbeth who is a courageous Scottish general not naturally inclined to commit evil deeds, but kills the king against his better judgment and afterward stews in guilt and paranoia.
Toward the end of the play he descends into a kind of frantic, boastful madness. The problem, the play suggests, is that once one decides to use violence to further one's quest for power, it is difficult to stop. First staged in 1606, the three witches and other dark imagery have entered the collective imagination.
In Abhishek Bharti's version, Shakespeare's dark tragedy stands transported from its original medieval Scottish locale to an ancient and tribal place and bestowed with a kind of timelessness and universality. In spite of the change in setting and language and numerous creative liberties, NNK's design is marked by a new eclectic theatrical grammar: gestural, symbolic and stylized. Drawing elements from Indian classical dramaturgical discourses, Bharata's Natya Shastra and the traditional Indian performance mode-all stand assimilated into Abhishek's own distinct form.
In the end president of the group Kumar.A.'Bharti' thanked Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, for extending their support to perform this play which is open to performers from different backgrounds and creative genres.
The cast comprises of Lalit sharma as Badarveer, Karan Mehra as kritveer, Akshay razdan as Sardar, Aman sharma as Bangi, Mukesh Bakshi as Bali, Niharika Sakshi as Nanda, Kanav Sharma as Mani, Karan, Anshika Sharma and Hema Shivgotra as Witch 1, 2 and 3 respectively .Production was managed by Lalit Sharma and assisted by Akshay Razdan, designed by Kumar.A. 'Bharti', Make-up by Shammi Dhamir, sets and property by Anshika, Hema and Priya Sharma, Costumes by Niharika Sakshi, Stage Manager Manik & Rahul, Associate director & Lights Aditya bharti, Music and direction by Abhishek Bharti.
