Ignoring Jammu’s potential
12/30/2020 11:19:19 PM
Tourism Department forgetting Jammu during a high level meet held in Srinagar to discuss New Year celebrations has once again proved that Kashmir still remains a focal point.
It’s unfortunate that despite Jammu having huge potential to attract tourists nothing much has been done by the Tourism Department to promote Jammu as a winter tourist destination. Whenever, the authorities talk about promoting winter tourism their entire focus remains on Kashmir. Is it that Jammu is not the priority? If winter tourism can be promoted in Kashmir why can’t it be done in Jammu?
After the abrogation of Article 370 and J&K being turned into a union territory many people were hoping that step motherly treatment being faced by Jammu region will end but it has not happened till date.
For the past seven decades Kashmir centric leaders kept on discriminating with the Jammu region and sabotaged the moves that were aimed at promoting different places in Jammu as the tourists destinations.
The former rulers always kept Kashmir on top and all their plans revolved around the Valley. Their biased approach acted as a biggest impediment in the development of the Jammu region.
Now, the times have changed and so have the rules of the game. And one hopes the helmsmen too will shift their focus from Kashmir to Jammu. There are many areas in Jammu region that have remained unexplored. The places which could have been developed into world famous resorts have not been even looked upon. No effort has been made to bring the spots in the hilly regions of Jammu region on the tourist maps.
After J&K’s reorganization, many things have changed but one thing remains unchanged i.e. exploring the potential of Jammu region to attract more and more tourists.
Everyone talks about famous resorts in Kashmir but no one even within the government has even given a thought to the idea of turning areas in Jammu region into small hill stations. If the areas in Himachal Pradesh can attract tourists, why can’t the places in Jammu be made attractive to attract the visitors during winters. People handling the tourism department need to think beyond promoting Jammu as the destination only during the fair weather. They should bear in mind that in the winter season, most Kashmiris prefer to stay in Jammu. If a proper strategy is framed, Jammu can become the crown of India.
