Early Times Report

UDHAMPUR, Feb 20: Balak Ram, about 80, of village Tajoor falling in Panchayat Cheni, Tehsil Majalta of district Udhampur lives in a tent, that too not in good shape. "I am surviving on meagre Rs. 1000 monthly pension from the government and five kg ration which gets exhausted much before the month ends leaving me to go without food," poor Balak Ram narrated.
He informed that about 10 years back his house was collapsed and then he purchased a plastic sheet to make a tent with the help of neighbours, but in this period of about a decade no one from the administration visited him with help.
"When it rains I wrap my body in blanket and try to sleep," he maintained adding many times he approached the concerned Sarpanch who replied that as Ram has only a single vote he doesn't hold any importance for him. It is pertinent to mention here that though there are many schemes for the poor and needy people launched by the Prime Minister Narindera Modi like PMAY-G etc but apathy of the officers concerned came in way and the poor Balak Ram remained a worst affected victim.
The villagers said that administration should first of all construct a house for the old man so that he should live safely and with dignity thereafter the authorities should take care of his health and food needs.
Amit Sharma, DDC Member of Majlata Territorial Constituency didn't respond to the repeated calls on his phone for comment. When contacted BDO Majalta said that the matter was in his knowledge but name of Balak Ram was not in 2011 census, but with the help of seniors the same will be done so that elder may get a house.
