‘Will decide soon’ says State Election Commissioner

EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, Feb 27: Candidates who contested elections from Drugmulla and Hajin-A constituencies of Kupwara and Bandipora districts respectively on Friday asked the State Election Commission to decide the matter and order counting of votes.
The authorities in Kupwara and Bandipora district had stopped counting votes over the nationality issue of two candidates.
Two candidates- Somiya Sadaf from Drugmulla and Shazia Aslam from Sonawari-are actually the residents of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. They are among over 150 women from PoK, who were brought via Nepal and settled in Kashmir along with their ex-militant husbands, as part of a policy of rehabilitation initiated by the Omar Abdullah government in 2010.
“From past two months we are suffering as the commission isn’t deciding the matter,” Shabnam Lone, who is also contesting the election from Drugmulla constituency on PAGD ticket, told Early Times over Phone.
She said that they (contesting candidates) have jointly filed a joint representation before the State Election Commission and requested that the counting of votes be held at earliest.
In the representation, the candidates have conveyed to the State Election Commissioner that they fear some mischief may happen by the hands of those ‘elements’ who they alleged were instrumental in stalling the counting votes.
“The counting was stopped in terms of the communication No.DPO/K/5245-50 Dated 21-12-2020 but the communication didn’t spell out reasons for the same and has created chaos and confusion,” they alleged.
Candidates said that the election authorities should have decided the nationality issue at the beginning of election when they filed nomination papers. “The candidate whose nationality is under scanner has got all documents including Permanent State Subject. She even talked to the Prime Minister in Man ki Baat Program,” lone said.
State Election Commissioner K K Sharma however said that the commission will decide the matter soon.
“Yes, we will decide the matter soon,” he told Early Times over the phone.
