PDP throws tantrums again
7/8/2021 12:43:09 AM
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has once again shown its true colours by refusing to meet the Delimitation Commis sion.
Instead of meeting the visiting panel, PDP general secretary and former minister Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura wrote a letter to the Delimitation Commission to express his party’s viewpoint. In the letter he described the whole exercise as “pre-planned” to favor a particular party and “aimed to further hurt the interests of people of J&K”.
PDP’s refusal to meet the panel didn’t stop the leaders of other parties from putting across their point of view to the commission. Even the constituents of Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) met the panel and termed PDP’s decision to stay away as its own discretion.
After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided it into two union territories—PDP is the only party that has been throwing the tantrums, other Kashmir centric parties have almost fallen in line and accepted the change in status-quo.
Most PDP leaders have deserted the party and have joined other political formations. PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti, has been left alone. Her attempt to constitute a united front against New Delhi has not worked as the PAGD exists only on papers. The National Conference that heads the PAGD has maintained distance from Mehbooba and her policies. The Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone has already walked out from the conglomerate. So there is nothing left for PDP to fall back upon. Former PDP leaders, who were a part of Mehbooba’s cabinet, have chosen their own paths.
Separatists, whom the erstwhile political regimes in J&K used to appease, have turned irrelevant as they have been cut to size. The PDP leadership needs to clarify whether it still represents the mainstream camp or they have changed their sides.
The PDP too has lost its relevance as people are no more interested in the party. After August 5, 2019, perception in Kashmir has changed, people are no more interested in rhetoric and slogans. All attempts of the PDP to get support from people have failed. Kashmiri people have realized that it’s no point supporting any such party or a group that sells illusions and dreams.
They are aware of the fact that Article 370 won’t come back and the politicians like Mehbooba Mufti are just staging a drama.
