International Snow Leopard Day celebrated at Kishtwar

KISHTWAR, Oct 23: Department of Wildlife Protection, Government of J&K in collaboration with National Development Foundation (NDF) and Department of Environmental Sciences, Government Degree college Kishtwar today organized a special event at Government Degree College Kishtwar. On this occasion, Vijay Kumar, DFO Marwah was chief guest and Prof Anirudh Sharma, Principal GDC Kishtwar presided over the programme. The students and staff members of Government Degree College Kishtwar participated in this awareness programme.
Dr Sehrish Gazal, HOD, Department of Environmental Sciences, welcomed the participants and said that Kishtwar college is honoured to host such an event at its campus. In his address, Prof Anirudh Sharma Principal Government Degree College Kishtwar highlighted the urgent need for creating awareness among common masses about the need to protect iconic wildlife species like Snow Leopard. The keynote address on the occasion was delivered by Dr Pankaj Chandan, Senior Conservation Scientist and Director Nature, Wildlife & Climate Change Division of NDF. In his address, Dr Chandan highlighted the current status of Snow Leopard in all the range countries of the species and key conservation initiatives taken for the conservation of this majestic wildlife species. Vijay Kumar, DFO Marwah called upon students to take keen interest in exploring the wildlife of their nearby areas.
He said that this will also help them to develop a scientific aptitude for future research on species like Snow Leopard.
Expressing his happiness over the organization of two programmes on the eve of International Snow Leopard Day, Suresh Gupta, Chief Wildlife Warden informed that Jammu & Kashmir is an important habitat for Snow Leopard.
Regional Wildlife Warden Jammu Dr Kumar MK, informed that currently the Department of J&K is giving much focus to research in various protected areas of Jammu and Kashmir which will help the department in taking science-based conservation initiatives. Rajiv Khajuria, President/CEO NDF said that such focused education and awareness activities in collaboration with J&K wildlife Department and GDC Kishtwar will be organized in future as well.
The key team which is part of these conservation activities included Majid Bashir, Wildlife Warden Chenab, Sajjad Zaheer, Range Officer and senior scientists from the reputed research and conservation organizations of India.
