Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 23: Three members of a nomadic family were killed and another critically injured after their makeshift tent came under debris of a wall which caved-in amid incessant rains in Noorpora Tral area of Pulwama district on Saturday. Officials said four members of the nomad (Gujjar Community) family came under the debris, toppling the makeshift tent belonging to one Irshad Ahmad Bargud near Mini Secretariat Noorpora Tral.
The deceased included two female members and male member of the family. Soon after the incident, locals and police launched a massive rescue operation. All four members of the family were removed from debris. “Three were declared brought dead at hospital while a fourth family member of the family was being given treatment,” officials said.
The deceased have been identified as Irshad Bargud son of Abdul Gani, Mahnaz Akhter daughter of Abdul Qayoom and Wahab Jan wife of Abdul Gafoor, all residents of Reasi.
Later this evening, Jammu and Kashmir Police claimed to have rescued at least thirty four nomadic tribe members belonging to several families in separate rescue operations in upper reaches of Budgam and Shopian districts
District Police Budgam said that it rescued four families comprising 16 members of the nomadic community stuck amid heavy winds and snowfall at higher reaches of Nagbal Yousmarg (Salamnak Nagbal top) and shifted them to Government High School Nagbal.
Shopian Police also claimed to have rescued a few nomadic families, which according to them comprised eighteen members.
"Shopian Police today rescued nomad families consisting of 18 members/livestock, wedged in the heavy winds/snowfall at the higher reaches of Neelinad Shahdab Karawa Shopian '', Shopian Police tweeted.
The incessant rains and snowfall in upper areas of Kashmir and particularly in South Kashmir’s Shopian-Kulgam district have damaged apple orchards.
Officials said that they received reports from almost all the districts of Kashmir and mostly from Shopian and Kulgam districts.
“Apple trees have suffered damages as the farmers had not completed the harvesting,” they said.
Director Horticulture Kashmir, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat on Saturday directed all Chief Horticulture Officers of Kashmir to keep offices open on Sunday to assess the damages.
Rains and snowfall also caused waterlogging in Srinagar and other towns of Kashmir. The Khanbal-Pahalgam road in Anantnag at Lazibal and other locations remained under water throughout the day.
