GDC Rajouri holds national webinar on Wetlands

RAJOURI, Feb 2: The Department of Botany of Govt. PG College Rajouri organized a national webinar on the theme "Wetland Action for People and Nature" to mark World Wetland Day as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav here today.
Prof. Prem Lal Uniyal from Department of Botany, University of Delhi and O.P. Sharma Vidyarthi, Former Director Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, J&K were resource persons on the occasion. The webinar was organized under the patronage of Prof. Mohd Farooq Mirza, officiating Principal of Govt. PG College Rajouri whereas Dr. Anwer Shah Head Department of Botany was Convener of the Webinar.
In his welcome address Prof. Farooq Mirza briefed the audience about the College background and pertinence of world wetland day celebration in College. Prof. Uniyal spoke at length about the wetlands, their importance, targets and individual as well as societal efforts to conserve the wetlands by citing examples from across the country. O.P. Sharma Vidyarthi in his lecture emphasized upon the four aspects of wetland conservation including passion, education, religion and activism. He highlighted the various wetlands and water bodies of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh with special reference to high altitude water bodies of Pir Panjal. Both resource persons asserted that students should be actively involved towards protection and conservation of wetlands.
Dr. Narinder Kumar and Dr. Harvinder Kour from GGM Science College Jammu, Prof. Romesh Atri from GDC Udhampur, Prof. Iqbal Raina, Dr. Saleem Wani and Prof. Arvind Sharma from Govt. PG College Rajouri also gave their reflections about the programme.
Earlier, Dr. Ashaq Malik, organizing secretary of webinar introduced the audience about the programme and conducted the proceedings. Prof. Ghulam Abass from Department of Botany presented the formal vote of thanks whereas Prof. Amjed Khan Bhatti provided the technical support. Prominent among others present on the occasion were Prof. N.P. Sharma, Dr. Khaliq Malik and Prof. Asif Ajaz Lone. A large number of students and faculty members both within UT of Jammu and Kashmir and outside participated in this one day National level virtual seminar.
