Srinagar gets Women’s Safety Squads, Jammu can wait!
2/16/2022 12:09:58 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 15: In wake of spike in crime against women in Jammu and Kashmir, the Srinagar Police on Monday launched Women's Safety Squads but the winter capital which “bears of the brunt of such complaints” is yet to get such specialized squads, essentially for the safety of the Dogra women.
On February 14, the Srinagar district police launched two women's safety squads for ensuring safety and security of women in Srinagar city.
The DIG Central Kashmir range Sujit Kumar who flagged off the special squads hoped that the initiative would bring down crime against women and prevent crimes like the recent acid attack by acting as deterrent.
Officials said initially two squads have been launched to patrol areas around coaching centres, schools, colleges and other vulnerable areas in Srinagar city.
Officials said the squads would also be directly in touch with administrators of the educational institutions/coaching centres for immediate action in case of any emergent requirement. “Each squad will contain five Lady Police officers/ officials. One lady Inspector namely Khalida Parveen of Srinagar Police has been made overall in-charge of these two squads,” the officials said.
This squad will work in close coordination with PCR vans, jurisdictional police stations and women's Police Station, Rambagh.
But for the winter capital of Jammu, “such a dedicated service is awaited.” A senior official told Early Times on the condition of anonymity that the even as both Jammu and Srinagar cities have dedicated women police stations the government felt need to introduce special squads in Srinagar alone.
Quoting official figures he said crimes against women in J&K witnessed around 11% increase from 3,069 cases in 2019 to 3,414 in 2020.
He added that Jammu had been witnessing more cases of crime like eve teasing and complaints of rapes and molestation as compared to Srinagar.
“When Jammu has been bearing the brunt why special service only for Srinagar? Otherwise also if the government claims to committed to end seven decades of discrimination with Jammu why such a neglect with Jammu,” the official said.
When contacted a senior official said similar police services were being upgraded in Jammu as well.
