Gharana Wetland project upsets locals, demand review of plan
3/5/2022 1:48:44 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Mar 4: Locals of Gharana village in RS Pura are upset over acquisition of private land for the Wetland Development project as they are rooting for the review of the plan as well as handsome compensation for their losses.
The Wildlife Department had acquired 402 kanals and 14 marlas of land and fenced it accordingly for the management plan of a wetland at Gharana in December last year.
Several locals are opposing Gharana Wetland Development project while they are also demanding enhancement in the compensation for them.
“First and foremost we oppose the proposed wetland development project. Even if the government wants to move ahead with this then we should be adequately compensated for our cultivable lands which we lost due to acquisition. They are just paying Rs 3,45000 per kanal which is far too less as the rate here for 1 marla is anything between 3 to 5 lakh,” said a local woman.
“If the government is not willing to enhance the compensation then it should allot us alternate land for cultivation. There is a huge chunk of barren land nearby. Government should give us that barren land. We are ready to carry out cultivation in that barren land so that we could earn our livelihood,” she added.
Several other women asked the government to meaningfully act in the direction of developing the Gharana Wetland for ensuring socio-economic upliftment of the people.
Another local said that about 1700 kanals of their land is on the other side of the fencing erected by the Department with no passage to reach there due to which they are unable to cultivate their fields.
Local residents demanded that adequate compensation be given to the farmers whose land chunks will come under this project.
It may be recalled here that the Gharana village is being developed for tourism purposes following the Government's plans to attract tourism in Suchetgarh.
