Ball in CBI’s Court
3/26/2022 12:34:03 AM
The government ordering a CBI probe into Rs 300 crore bribe allegation leveled by former J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik can open a Pandora’s Box.
On October 17, 2021, Malik had said at a function in Rajasthan that two files had come for his consideration and one of the secretaries had told him that if he approves these he can get Rs 150 crore each. He had claimed that he had turned down the offer.
Malik had alleged that he was offered Rs 300 crore in return for clearing the files of two big industrial houses. However, he refused to accept the money and cancelled the deals.
Now, the government has decided to probe the allegations that were leveled by him. The probe has been handed over to the CBI. It means that the people, whom Malik has blamed for offering him the bribe will be questioned, as will be the former J&K Governor. He will have to put on record who were the people who tried to bribe him on whose behest he was approached.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the country’s premiere agency and if the allegations leveled by Malik are found true it can lead to many skeletons tumbling out. But if the charges are found untrue, the former J&K Governor will be left embarrassed.
After the former J&K Governor had triggered a row, many people had stated that his statements shouldn’t be taken seriously as he has a habit of first saying something and then retracting. But no one did send him a defamation notice for maligning his image. Either they didn’t take him seriously or he was speaking the truth. The CBI probe will investigate all the angles and it can lead to top officers, who had worked with the former J&K Governor in a tight spot.
Now, it remains to be seen whether the probe will be taken to its logical end or not. The decision of the government to order the enquiry is a significant move and it can bring facts to the fore. The ball is in the CBI’s court and the agency is known for its integrity.
