Border dwellers of Abdullian rue administrative apathy

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Mar 25: Famous for its Milk Cake, Abdullian-one of the last Indian villages along the Indo-Pak International Border in RS Pura sector- is still craving for holistic development of their hamlet as the area still lacks basic necessities including main roads, drains, lanes or bye-lanes.
Lack of development in Abdullian village exposes the government’s claims that it is committed to provide better civic amenities in every nook and corner of the Union Territory.
Residents of the area said that they are deprived of basic civic amenities, including carpeted roads, drains, etc and they have been living with such pitiable conditions since long but the government never bothers to improve the situation.
In the absence of drains, sewage water is being discharged on the roads by residents, adding to woes of the people while several roads and lanes are in a dilapidated condition in the village as they were never resurfaced for the last several years, they added.
Not only the roads and lanes which need improvement, the people of the village are also grappling with the problem of frequent heavy shelling and firing from across the border. According to locals, they are facing the brunt of not only the lack of development but regular heavy mortar shelling and firing by the Pakistan Rangers have also made their life miserable.
A local resident informed that a few years back, a local youth, who was newly married, got killed and his father seriously injured when a mortar shell from across the border fell on their house but the government paid no attention towards rehabilitation of the family.
“The young man who was newlywed got killed while his old father lost an arm in the shelling. The administration did nothing to compensate for the losses of the family.
The poor old man was not even granted a disabled pension. There is nobody to listen to our grievances,” he said. “Not only the government and administration but the local politicians also ignore our plight, they are only visible when elections are around,” he added.
