Jammu needs 1200 MWs but Power Deptt has only 600 MWs available: Qazmi
Says, if Govt doesn’t buy electricity, region can witness 5 to 7 hour power cut daily

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 21: Vice-President of provincial power employees Ajaz Qazmi on Thursday expressed dismay over the fact that despite J&K having Salal, Dulhasti and Baglihar power projects, the Jammu region is facing power shortage of 600 Megawatts.
Talking to Early Times Qazmi said, “Jammu needs 1200 Megwatts of power but only 600 MWs are being provided.
This has led to 5-hour power cut and if the government doesn’t buy additional electricity, then Jammu residents should gear up to face for 5 to 7 hours power cuts.”
He said, “It’s unfortunate that despite J&K having Salal, Dulhasti and Baglihar power projects, we have to buy electricity from the Northern Grid at exorbitant rates.”
He said, “Jammu faced power crisis in last summer season also and it seems this year too we may face the similar situation.
After J&K’s transition into a Union Territory power scenario in Jammu has worsened.” He said, “This year revenue collection has improved but the government departments are major defaulters. They don’t pay the bills even after using the electricity.
If the government departments will clear the liabilities, there will be no revenue deficit.”
Qazmi said, “Even today electricity was snapped in Jammu city from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. Electricity shortage has triggered unprecedented crisis in sweltering heat.”
